Lorem Ipsum still has a place

Generative AI makes realistic draft copy easy to create, but Lorem Ipsum still has a place in wireframes, reviews, and specialist work.

Lorem Ipsum is getting harder to find in design work.

It has not disappeared, but it shows up less often. When it does, it can make a layout feel unfinished, as though the team has not yet considered what the interface will need to say.

That does not make it useless. It means its role has become more specific.

Why it existed

Typesetting houses in the 1960s used scrambled passages from Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum to fill print layouts with neutral text. The idea was practical. Unreadable text kept reviewers focused on spacing and type hierarchy instead of the words themselves.

That worked when the main question was how type sat on a page. Digital interfaces ask more of their content, which is where the limits of Lorem Ipsum become clear.

Where it breaks

Real content has shape and meaning. When it replaces placeholder text, layouts often break in predictable ways:

  • A heading that sat on one line in Latin runs to three in English
  • A card grid that looked balanced becomes uneven when items have different content lengths
  • A button label that fit perfectly overflows its border

The same problem follows a design into usability testing. Participants struggle to engage with an interface they cannot read, so their feedback ends up being about the placeholder instead of the product. A layout cannot be tested honestly until it holds something close to real content.

The shift is already visible

You can see this shift in design portfolios. Candidates who once filled mockups with Lorem Ipsum are now using tools like ChatGPT to generate draft copy for each design. The gibberish is gone. In its place is simulated content that looks and reads like the real thing.

By 2026, 75% of designers reported using AI tools daily, a higher share than developers. Over 80% of creators now use AI somewhere in their process. The important change is where designers are applying these tools. They are using them at the beginning of a project, not only at the end.

Before generative AI, teams that wanted to avoid Lorem Ipsum had to write temporary copy by hand or wait for it from a client. That back and forth kept prototypes grounded, and well-written temporary copy sometimes made it into the final product. It was also difficult to sustain at pace. AI makes the same content-first approach possible in minutes.

What realistic drafts change

This kind of realistic draft is sometimes called proto-content. It is written or generated to match the context, tone, and constraints of a specific design. It is not final copy, and it still needs editing and brand shaping. Its value is that it can test things Lorem Ipsum cannot:

  • A healthcare layout filled with clinical language to stress-test how it holds up against long medical terms
  • A multilingual product tested across different alphabets and character sets before a line of production code is written
  • A repeating feed populated with varied entries rather than the same sentence duplicated across every row

That last point is easy to underestimate. A card grid can look balanced when every entry is the same length, then fall apart when the content begins to vary. Proto-content exposes that problem while the design can still change.

Why Lorem Ipsum still helps

Realistic copy is not always the right choice. In a design review, readable copy gets read, and once people start reading it, they often start editing it.

A meeting about information hierarchy can quickly become a debate about a subheading or a capital letter. Lorem Ipsum prevents that when the words are not ready for discussion and the team needs feedback on the design itself.

The realism of AI-generated copy creates another risk. A draft can look finished even when no one has reviewed it, which makes it easier for a developer or editor to publish it by mistake. Lorem Ipsum is difficult to confuse with final copy.

It can also remove a dependency when designers and copywriters are working on different timelines. The design can keep moving without pretending that temporary copy is ready for production.

In specialist fields such as medicine, law, and infrastructure, generated copy carries a more serious risk. A designer may not have the expertise to notice when it sounds plausible but is wrong. Neutral placeholder text makes no claims while the team waits for an expert.

None of this is a reason to return to Lorem Ipsum everywhere. It is a reason to use it deliberately.

It depends on the stage

At the wireframe stage, neutral placeholders can keep attention on structure. Once a design moves into high fidelity, proto-content gives the layout something realistic to respond to.

Client reviews require more judgment. Readable copy is useful when the words are ready to be discussed, but distracting when the meeting is meant to settle the design. Specialist work requires even more care, because a convincing draft is not a substitute for expertise.

Generative AI has not made Lorem Ipsum obsolete. It has given designers a better alternative when content needs to behave like real content. The useful change is that one kind of placeholder no longer has to do every job.
